AI For Finance That Shows Its Math: Meet Numos

By
Haley Brannan

At this point, every department has adopted AI. Sales uses it to draft outreach and refine targeting. Engineering uses it to ship code faster. But finance? Finance has been watching from the sidelines, arms crossed, for a pretty good reason: they’re the ones that have to sign off on the numbers. When your name is on the audit trail, you can’t afford to trust a tool that can’t explain how it got its answer. And until now, most AI tools have asked finance teams to do exactly that. Here’s a number, trust us. Good luck in your board meeting!

And even as general AI tools get smarter, they still can't do what finance teams actually need. Claude is great for building a new model from scratch. But your finance org doesn't live in fresh spreadsheets. It lives in the 10-year-old workbook that estimates inventory excess and obsolescence, connected to real-time ERP data, governed by policies that live in someone's head. Numos handles that kind of complexity: it takes your messy, layered, deeply specific financial workflows and works within them, giving you answers with the context to back them up.

Numos is taking a compelling approach, which is why we’re excited to back them in their $4.25M Seed round led by General Catalyst

The Company

Numos is building an AI teammate for finance organizations. The platform sits on top of a company's existing finance stack, connecting to accounting systems, billing tools, data warehouses, and spreadsheets. From there, it does the work: explaining why revenue shifted, chasing down missing invoices, building accruals, and closing out reconciliations - and continuously analyzes what's happening across all of the connected systems.

The product is built around three pillars: insights that explain the "why" behind financial changes, conversations that handle transactional communications like chasing down contract amendments, and workflows that automate recurring tasks like invoice creation and accruals. Unlike generic AI copilots that give you a chat window and wish you luck, Numos plugs directly into the tools finance teams already use (so yes, you can keep your ERP as is), providing the context that the system needs for accuracy, and completes tasks end-to-end.

Why You Should Pay Attention

Everyone agrees that AI in finance should work, but almost nobody trusts it yet. Gartner recently predicted that embedded AI will drive a 30% faster financial close by 2028, but most CFOs are still in early stages of adoption. The holdup? Data quality concerns, integration headaches, and the big one: black-box AI that nobody can audit.

Finance teams aren't just crunching numbers for fun. They're accountable for those numbers. When the auditors come knocking, "the AI said so" doesn't cut it. That's why most finance organizations have been slow to adopt AI tools, even as every other department races ahead.

Numos addresses this head-on with what they call transparent AI. Every output shows its sources, its reasoning, and a full audit trail. From variance analysis and reconciliations to quote-to-cash automation, every answer can be traced back to the underlying transactions and reviewed through audit-ready workflows with preparer-reviewer separation and logging.

The Details

Under the hood, Numos orchestrates a team of specialized AI agents that each understand financial context. These agents automate repetitive workflows, evaluate their own outputs, and coordinate across existing finance systems. Think of it as a well-trained finance team that works 24/7, handles the grunt work, and always shows its homework.

The platform connects to the tools companies already run, from their general ledger and billing systems to their data warehouses and even those spreadsheets everyone swears they'll stop using someday. It ingests unstructured data, maps it to financial context, and surfaces the drivers behind changes. When revenue dips or costs spike, Numos tells you why, with receipts.

This is where Numos separates from general-purpose AI tools. A chatbot can summarize a P&L. Numos can take your legacy reserve model, pair it with live ERP data, and tell you exactly why the number moved, down to the transaction level. That's the difference between a tool that's helpful and a teammate that actually knows your books.

Customers are seeing 80% faster FP&A reporting cycles and closing their books in less than half the time. For anyone who's watched a finance team spend three weeks closing the books, that's a big deal, so it makes sense that Numos is already gaining traction with enterprise customers ranging from scaled private companies like Dandy to public companies like Udemy.

Why We're Invested

CEO Parijat Sarkar brings a rare blend of product and go-to-market leadership that he built at Zenefits and Microsoft, where he was a senior vice president with leadership roles spanning product, growth, and engineering. Co-founder and CTO Mitul Tiwari is a PhD from UT Austin who spent the last decade building large-scale AI systems at LinkedIn and ServiceNow. His prior startup, PassageAI, an early conversational AI platform, was acquired by ServiceNow. Together, they have deep credibility in both the finance domain and the AI infrastructure needed to serve it.

We met Numos through a stellar referral from an Operator LP and portfolio founder, and feedback from several Operator LPs and finance leaders confirmed what we were seeing: this team knows the problem inside and out and how to deliver. The progress that they had made with no funding was substantial - already had a product live with customers and were actively proving value across several different use cases. This not only validated the execution and go-to-market capabilities of the team, but the urgency with which finance operators are looking for a solution. Given our own team's background in finance and accounting and the strength of our Operator LP base in those areas, we're well-positioned to put the Collective Venture Model to work for Numos in this phase.
